[Reporter Liao Yizhen Comprehensive Interview]

A large amount of evidence in the natural environment indicates that the Earth is about to enter another ice age. Based on long-term observation and analysis of climate change, it is warned that the Earth's long-standing warm period is coming to an end, and it is about to enter a 100,000-year "ice age." However, Professor Wang Zhonghe from the Institute of Earth Sciences at Academia Sinica stated that existing human environmental disturbances, such as the temperature rise caused by global warming, must be considered, so the probability of this phenomenon occurring should not be high.

This report, based on geological records such as ice sheets and ocean sediments, as well as studies of ancient plains and animal populations, points out that the ice age lasts for 100,000 years, interspersed with warm periods suitable for animal survival, lasting about 12,000 years.

One of the bases of this study is the astronomical "Milankovitch cycles" theory. The "Milankovitch cycles" is a climate change theory that believes the "ice age-interglacial" cycle is determined by changes in the amount of solar radiation received in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere during summer. Since 1970, the "Milankovitch cycles" theory has been the main reason recognized by climate scientists for the occurrence of ice ages.

This latest study points out: "The analysis results based on the Milankovitch cycles theory lead to a conclusion that the Earth's climate will become extremely cold in the next 20,000 years."

The research report mentions that the "greenhouse effect theory" has always been a prominent theory in the climate community, believing that the Earth's climate will become increasingly warmer due to the greenhouse effect. However, this report points out that using the greenhouse effect theory to predict future climate changes on Earth is incorrect, because the greenhouse effect theory is limited to research predictions made for the past 1000 years, ignoring evidence from the past million years.

The climate predictions made by the greenhouse effect theory hit a snag in 2007. In 2007, the most snowfall since 1966 and the lowest temperatures since 2001 were recorded. The study points out that the overall temperature of the Earth will only get lower, not higher.

Regarding this issue, Professor Wang Zhonghe from the Institute of Earth Sciences at Academia Sinica stated that if based on the Milankovitch cycles theory, it would indeed lead to this prediction result.

However, existing environmental factors must still be considered, such as the temperature rise caused by global warming, which will indeed interfere with the cooling of the ice age, and the evolution speed of the ice age is very slow, while the rate of global temperature increase is much higher than the cooling speed of the ice age, so the situation of the Earth entering an ice age should not occur.
