Research from the UK and Australia has confirmed that wearing a mask during the flu season can indeed reduce the chance of infection.
Scientists from Imperial College London and the University of New South Wales in Australia studied the infection status of over a hundred families in Sydney during the 2006 and 2007 flu seasons. They found that when children contracted the flu, parents who wore masks as instructed had a one-fourth chance of being infected compared to parents who did not wear masks.
Professor Ferguson from Imperial College said that during a flu pandemic, vaccines are often insufficient, and simply wearing a mask as instructed can significantly reduce the chance of infection. However, he mentioned that once a mask is worn, it should be kept on as advised by a doctor and not removed at will.
The UK is currently experiencing a peak flu season, and medical institutions have prepared 350 million medical masks for healthcare workers to use.
