An 80-year-old woman in Taichung County sought treatment at a folk therapy center two years ago due to leg pain. A man surnamed Gao, who had no medical license, used tweezers to pull out the woman's toenails and even scraped the skin off her feet with a sickle, resulting in necrosis and eventual amputation of her foot. The judge sentenced Gao to one year and eight months in prison, but the elderly victim, dissatisfied with the verdict, wept bitterly.
Even with a walking aid, 81-year-old Grandma Xu struggles with every step. A distance of just a few meters feels exhausting, bringing tears to her eyes. Below her left knee, her lower limb is entirely gone. Rolling up her pant leg and touching the amputated area, the pain from a year ago floods back.
Last July, the elderly woman received treatment at this folk therapy center. At the time, Gao Yuanshui, who had no medical license, subjected her to a brutal traditional therapy that led to necrosis in her left foot and forced amputation. The judge convicted Gao of violating the Medical Practitioners Act and sentenced him to one year and eight months in prison, but the family remains outraged.
After the incident, the folk therapy center shut down, and Gao Yuanshui avoided public appearances. However, the elderly woman lost her mobility forever, and the hardship of her later years is heartbreaking. (FTV News, Qiao Zuyu and Lin Jinlong, Taichung Report)
