American researchers today predicted that the number of newly diagnosed cancer patients each year will surge by 45% over the next 20 years, from 1.6 million in 2010 to 2.3 million, affecting many elderly individuals and minorities.

Researchers at the University of Texas used demographic trends to forecast a 67% increase in cancer patients aged 65 and above by 2030, rising from 1 million in 2010 to 1.6 million in 2030.

Additionally, they projected that the number of cancer diagnoses among non-white populations would double by 2030, increasing from 330,000 to 660,000 cases annually.

These figures assume that cancer incidence rates remain at similar levels. In a telephone interview, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas stated, "This essentially illustrates how demographic changes in the U.S. will impact cancer incidence."

They added, "By 2030, 70% of all cancer patients will be elderly, and 28% will be minorities. The number of elderly diagnosed with cancer will be equivalent to the total number of cancer patients in the U.S. in 2010." (Central News Agency Translation)
