The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized acupuncture as an effective treatment for 64 diseases. Domestic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners have also substantiated through scientific research that acupuncture can alleviate postoperative pain, aid in post-stroke rehabilitation, and significantly assist in women’s weight loss. These findings have been published in international journals. Every summer, many foreign physicians also travel to Taiwan specifically to study TCM acupuncture.
Professor Lin Zhao-Geng of China Medical University collaborated with Tsai Sheng-Kuo and Sun Wei-Ren from the Department of Anesthesiology at National Taiwan University Hospital, as well as the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, to conduct a study involving 100 hysterectomy patients. They compared the effects of traditional painkillers and acupuncture in relieving pain during the peak 24-hour postoperative pain period.
The results showed that using 100Hz electroacupuncture on the Zusanli (ST36) acupoint for hysterectomy patients reduced painkiller usage by over 60%. This study was published in the internationally renowned journal *Pain* and has garnered significant attention from the global medical community.
Hsu Chung-Hua, Chief Medical Officer of the Taipei City Hospital Chinese Medicine Division, organizes TCM experiential courses for foreign physicians every summer. He noted that electroacupuncture applied to the abdomen for weight loss resulted in an average reduction of 1.7 kg over six weeks among 72 participants, with waistlines shrinking by an average of one inch. Recently, he conducted another study involving 60 obese women with a BMI over 27, administering ear acupuncture twice a week for six weeks. Although their weight did not decrease, hormonal changes were observed, which could further reduce appetite. These studies were published in the international journal *Women’s Health*.
