A survey by American scientists shows that glaciers worldwide are melting rapidly, and the rate of melting is even faster than previously predicted.
The U.S. Geological Survey has been continuously monitoring three glaciers in Washington State and Alaska over the past 50 years. The results reveal that these glaciers are melting at an increasingly rapid pace, severely impacting the ecological environment. Given that the climates of Washington State and Alaska are entirely different, American scientists believe the glacier melting phenomenon they observed is likely occurring in other glaciers as well.
For example, scientists point out that glaciers in Washington State have already melted by half since 1960, and another half is expected to disappear over the next hundred years.
Glacier melting not only affects the climate but also human water resources. For instance, residents of Anchorage, Alaska's capital, rely on water from two lakes, which are fed by Alaskan glaciers. However, as these glaciers melt rapidly, the water flow is decreasing, which will inevitably impact Anchorage's domestic water supply in the future.
