World Health Organization officials have stated that the H1N1 swine flu will accelerate its global spread in the coming months, with most countries likely to see cases doubling every three to four days until the peak of transmission passes.

The WHO emphasized that most cases are mild and do not require treatment. However, they are concerned that large-scale outbreaks could overwhelm hospitals and health authorities, particularly in poorer countries.

In a pre-recorded video, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan also noted that pregnant women face a higher risk of complications if infected with the H1N1 virus. Additionally, the virus poses a more severe threat to individuals with conditions such as asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders.

Earlier, the WHO estimated that up to 2 billion people worldwide could contract the H1N1 flu over the next two years, accounting for nearly one-third of the global population.
