A recent U.S. research report indicates that Taiwan has the lowest fertility rate in the world. In just over a decade, India will surpass China to become the most populous country globally.
The latest global population trends report released by the Washington-based nonprofit organization Population Reference Bureau (PRB) states that despite declining fertility rates in developed countries, the global population is still increasing at a rate of 1 billion people every 12 years. It is projected that within two years, the world's population will reach 7 billion, posing significant challenges to human health, food supply, and education.
The report notes that fertility rates remain high in less developed countries, while mortality rates have declined, leading to continued rapid population growth. Sub-Saharan African countries are experiencing the fastest growth, with Africa expected to add 1 billion people in the next 40 years.
Currently, 80% of children live in Africa and Asia. Niger has the highest fertility rate in the world, with an average of 7.4 children per woman.
In contrast, developed countries are seeing increasingly lower fertility rates. Higher education levels and greater urban migration correlate with lower fertility rates. The regions with the lowest fertility rates today are Europe and East Asia.
Taiwan currently has the lowest fertility rate globally, with an average of only one child per woman.
China's one-child policy has curbed population growth, and it is estimated that by the 2020s, China will relinquish its title as the world's most populous country to India. 980919
