Addiction to Happy Farm can really cause insomnia! There’s a case in Taipei where a 24-year-old office worker played Facebook every day until bedtime. Even after going to bed, she still worried about her crops being stolen, leading to two months of continuous insomnia. According to statistics from the Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine, over 4 million people in Taiwan suffer from chronic insomnia, meaning roughly one in every six Taiwanese experiences insomnia.
Stealing eggplants, planting crops—more and more people are becoming obsessed with Happy Farm. In Taipei, a 24-year-old office worker was so addicted that she couldn’t sleep at night and would get up to go online, just to check if her crops had been stolen.
Dr. Li Xinqian, Director of Psychiatry at Shuanghe Hospital, said: "Because she couldn’t relax, it was hard for her to stay asleep. So she would wake up, and with nothing else to do, she would turn on the computer and go online again. This created a vicious cycle."
Constantly preoccupied with the Happy Farm game, she would toss and turn in bed, worrying about her fruits being stolen or her shells going missing. This inability to sleep directly affected her rest.
According to statistics from the Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine, at least 4 million people in Taiwan suffer from chronic insomnia—double the number from a decade ago—meaning about one-fifth of the population has sleep issues.
Dr. Li Xinqian: "Engaging in such activities, due to the stimulation of light and visuals, can worsen sleep. It’s better to switch to gentler activities, like reading, which is preferable to going online or watching TV."
Aside from reducing internet time and avoiding computer use half an hour before bed, doctors also recommend drinking a little red wine before sleep, avoiding intense exercise, and trying to calm the mind for a good night’s rest.
