Taiwanese farmed abalone has been found to contain carcinogens, and it is alleged that the Taipei County Government concealed the findings and failed to disclose them. Following the incident of imported toxic abalone, the Taipei County Agriculture Bureau conducted inspections last month at five breeding farms along the North Coast. Three out of the five farms were found to have exceeded the standard for the carcinogen nitrofuran, with one business even exceeding the limit by 11 times. However, this inspection report, completed three weeks ago, was never publicly released by the County Agriculture Bureau, drawing heavy criticism.

The Taipei County Government inspected abalone farms and discovered carcinogens exceeding the standard but failed to publish the test results. Out of the five farms inspected, three were found non-compliant. The permissible level of nitrofuran should only be 0.3 ppb, but abalone from farms owned by a Mr. Li and a Mr. Lian exceeded the limit by six and four times, respectively. The most shocking case was a farm owned by a Mr. Tsai, which exceeded the limit by 11 times. The farmers insisted on their innocence, claiming they had never used nitrofuran.

After the test results were released on November 25, the County Agriculture Bureau immediately had the farmers sign agreements prohibiting shipments. However, they chose not to disclose the results publicly. The bureau denied any attempt to conceal the findings.

Following the Chinese toxic abalone incident, Taiwanese abalone has once again raised food safety concerns. The authorities followed regulations, waiting for retest results by the end of December before making an announcement. But during this waiting period, if someone unknowingly purchases carcinogenic abalone, who will be held responsible?
