A 19-year-old girl recently dined with friends and ate ginger duck stew. That night, she experienced eye pain and blurred vision. The symptoms worsened the next day, prompting emergency medical attention. Examination revealed she had iritis, which could lead to blindness in severe cases. The girl had a history of ankylosing spondylitis. Doctors pointed out that individuals with immune-related diseases should avoid excessive tonics, as overactivation of the immune system can harm health.
The case was observed at Taipei Tri-Service General Hospital’s ophthalmology department. The girl was treated with anti-inflammatory eye drops, and her vision gradually improved after one to two weeks. Patients with immune disorders such as ankylosing spondylitis or rheumatism may experience overactivation of their immune system if they consume excessive tonics. In this case, the girl’s immune system attacked her iris, causing inflammation (iritis). Recent outpatient data from Tri-Service General Hospital also shows a 20-30% increase in iritis cases after winter began. Doctors advise seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms of iritis appear, as severe cases can lead to blindness.
Aside from patients with immune disorders, individuals with the "three highs" (high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol) should also avoid frequent consumption of high-calorie tonics. Additionally, those with fever or infections should refrain from tonics, as they may worsen symptoms.
