Recently, Kaohsiung Medical University confirmed that the "daodiaozi" betel nut contains extremely high levels of arecoline, which can cause cardiac abnormalities and pose a fatal risk if consumed. Unexpectedly, another fatal incident has occurred. A 29-year-old man went out with friends in Keelung on New Year's Day for a night of karaoke and heavy drinking. The next day, he bought breakfast and betel nuts for everyone. However, after chewing the betel nut, he suddenly exclaimed that he had eaten a "daodiaozi," then rushed to the bathroom to vomit violently. Soon after, he began convulsing, fell unconscious, and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Surveillance footage showed the man in a state of shock, with almost no vital signs upon arrival at the hospital. Medical staff immediately wheeled him into the emergency room for resuscitation. The 29-year-old Mr. Chen had partied with friends at a karaoke bar in Keelung on New Year’s Day before continuing to drink at another friend’s home. The next morning, he bought breakfast and betel nuts for everyone.

According to friends, after chewing the betel nut, the man said he had accidentally consumed a "daodiaozi." Shortly after speaking, he broke out in a sweat, rushed to the bathroom to vomit, and minutes later collapsed on the sofa in agony, convulsing, losing consciousness, and even experiencing incontinence. Despite emergency treatment, he could not be saved.

Dr. Yang Ruolan from Keelung Hospital stated, "It (daodiaozi) doesn’t require cumulative concentration—just one can be fatal."

Doctors suspect that the man’s extreme fatigue, combined with consuming a "daodiaozi" (which contains twice the arecoline concentration of a regular betel nut), accelerated physical stress, leading to palpitations, rapid heartbeat, and ultimately fatal shock.

A betel nut vendor said, "Once they’re sold, they’re already individually packaged, making it hard to distinguish (daodiaozi)."

"Daodiaozi" grows in the opposite direction of normal betel nuts, but once harvested, it looks identical to regular betel nuts, making it easy to overlook. This is not the first fatality linked to "daodiaozi." Earlier, a man in Kaohsiung suffered shock and arrhythmia after consuming one, leaving him in a vegetative state despite resuscitation efforts. Subsequent tests by Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital confirmed that "daodiaozi" contains dangerously high levels of arecoline, which can cause cardiac damage. Authorities urge betel nut chewers to exercise extreme caution for their own safety.
