Women with big bottoms no longer need to despair—research has found that those with thick thighs and plump buttocks have a lower risk of heart disease and metabolic issues.
A study conducted in the UK discovered that fat in the hips has anti-inflammatory properties, helping to clear harmful fatty acids from the body and prevent arterial blockages. Having too little fat in the buttocks could potentially lead to metabolic problems. The study suggests it's better to have a larger rear than a thick waist, as fat accumulation around the waist poses the greatest health risks.
British researchers predict that increasing hip fat to maintain health could become a future field of medical research. Ideally, harmful fat from other parts of the body could be relocated to the hips.
While fat in the thighs and buttocks is harder to lose than waist fat—which may sound discouraging—the study points out that this is actually a protective mechanism of the body. If hip fat breaks down too quickly, it releases large amounts of cytokines, triggering inflammatory responses and increasing the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
