German researchers have stated that among high-risk patients with cardiovascular disease, erectile dysfunction is a strong precursor to heart attacks and sudden death.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that a study of 1,519 men with cardiovascular disease found that men with erectile dysfunction had twice the risk of heart attack or death compared to others.
A study published by Germany's University of Saarland in the American journal *Circulation* suggests that men with erectile dysfunction should also undergo cardiovascular disease screenings.
Some experts hope that doctors will inquire about erectile dysfunction symptoms during health check-ups for men over 40.
Erectile dysfunction is linked to insufficient blood flow in the penile arteries, which are much smaller than coronary arteries. For some men, long-term erectile dysfunction may be an early sign of narrowing arteries.
The study tracked men with cardiovascular disease across 13 countries, investigating whether they experienced heart attacks or strokes.
These men were also questioned about erectile dysfunction at the start of the study, after two years, and after five years.
After accounting for factors such as age and smoking, men with erectile dysfunction not only had twice the risk of heart attack or sudden death but also a 10% higher risk of stroke and a 20% greater likelihood of hospitalization due to heart failure.
Lead author Michael Boehm stated that men receiving treatment for erectile dysfunction should also be screened for cardiovascular disease, though this does not always happen.
Boehm said, "Once the medication works, patients don’t come back for follow-ups."
He added, "These men are being treated for erectile dysfunction rather than the underlying cardiovascular disease, leaving many at risk." (Translator: Lin Ting-yi, Central News Agency)
