Recently, many hospitals in mainland China have reported a significant increase in cases of sudden deafness and otitis media, with most of these ear conditions linked to improper lifestyle habits.
Zhang Li, a sophomore, is an avid online gamer. During the entire winter break, he slept only about three to four hours a day, spending the rest of his time in front of the computer. After more than a month, he suddenly noticed his hearing had declined. He said, "While gaming, I often felt tinnitus in my ears but didn’t pay much attention. Once school started, I kept feeling like I couldn’t hear clearly in class, and sometimes I couldn’t hear anything at all." The doctor diagnosed him with sudden deafness, which was related to prolonged gaming.
Like Zhang Li, Ms. Wang has also been troubled by an ear problem recently. In her daily life, she frequently uses cotton swabs to clean her ears. Over time, her ears developed abnormalities. She said, "It feels like water is sloshing around in my ears, making a 'gurgling' sound, and it’s very painful. The doctor said it was caused by cleaning my ears too often."
It is reported that in recent years, ear disease patients have gradually shifted from children to young and middle-aged adults. Currently, the increase in ear disease cases among young and middle-aged adults is mostly related to improper lifestyle habits. Shi Xiaoxia, director of the Otolaryngology Department at Harbin Second Hospital, said, "Frequent use of headphones, excessive ear cleaning, and not drying the ears after swimming can all lead to ear diseases. Sudden deafness requires prompt medical attention—80–90% of patients can be cured. Delaying treatment may result in permanent hearing damage."
