A U.S. study found that listening to music you enjoy can dilate blood vessels, which is very beneficial for the heart. Of course, listening to music you dislike can have negative effects on the heart.

The University of Maryland Medical Center had test subjects listen to music. When they heard their favorite tunes, their blood flow increased and cholesterol levels decreased. Dr. Miller, who led the study, said that listening to preferred music provides heart benefits similar to aerobic exercise or taking medication.

Miller noted that when listening to this music, the subjects also released nitric oxide, a chemical known as the "happy element." He believes it is this sense of joy that promotes smooth blood circulation and reduces the likelihood of blood clots.
