Scientists have discovered that meeting a beautiful woman may be harmful to health.
According to a study by the University of Valencia in Spain, just five minutes alone with a beautiful woman can increase the body's levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
This effect is particularly pronounced among men who perceive the woman as "out of their league."
The body secretes cortisol, which is associated with heart disease, when under physical or mental stress.
The Daily Telegraph in London reported that researchers conducted an experiment with 84 male students, asking each to stay in a room solving Sudoku puzzles while two strangers—one male and one female—were also present in the room.
When the woman left and only two men remained in the room together, the stress levels of the volunteer subjects did not increase. However, when the subject was left alone in the room with the woman, his cortisol levels rose.
The researchers concluded: "In this study, we believe that the presence of a beautiful woman may lead most men to think there is an opportunity for a relationship."
The researchers said: "Although some men might shy away because they feel the beautiful woman is out of their league, most men will exhibit anxiety and hormonal responses."
The researchers added: "This study shows that after just five minutes of interaction with a young and attractive woman, men's cortisol levels increase."
Small amounts of cortisol can have positive effects, such as heightened alertness and improved health. However, chronically elevated cortisol levels can exacerbate conditions like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and impotence. (Translator: Central News Agency, Lin Ting-Yi)
