A Canadian research team published a study on the 3rd in the American Medical Association's *Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine*, indicating that children who frequently watch television from the age of two are more likely to become obese, experience hindered intellectual development, perform poorly in school, and be bullied by classmates.
The study surveyed 1,314 children born in Quebec, Canada, between 1997 and 1998. Parents recorded the number of hours their children spent watching TV at ages two-and-a-half and four-and-a-half. By the time the children turned ten, school teachers evaluated their academic performance, hygiene habits, and psychosocial development.
The results showed that for every additional hour of television watched per week starting from age two, children later exhibited a 6% decline in math performance, a 7% decrease in classroom participation, and a 10% higher chance of being bullied by peers. Additionally, their physical activity decreased by 9%, junk food consumption increased by 10%, and their Body Mass Index (BMI) rose by 5%. The study also noted that, on average, two-year-olds watched 8.8 hours of TV per week, while four-year-olds watched 14.8 hours.
Researchers believe the preschool years are crucial for brain development, and parents should reduce their children's TV time to allow for more activities that benefit physical and mental growth. The study has sparked public concern, prompting calls for the government to set limits on children's TV viewing.
In the U.S., pediatricians advise parents to prohibit TV for children under two and limit older children to no more than one to two hours per day.
The French government bans TV companies from producing programs for children under three, while the Australian government recommends that three- to five-year-olds watch no more than one hour of TV per day.
