A 47-year-old married woman in the UK suffered brain damage from two car accidents, losing all short-term memory since 1994. As a result, she wakes up every day thinking it’s the same day, forcing her husband to convince her daily that they are married—a scenario strikingly similar to the Hollywood romantic comedy *50 First Dates*.

According to a report by the *Daily Mail* on the 11th, Michelle Philpots, who lives in Spalding, Lincolnshire, England, wakes up each morning needing her husband to persuade her that they are a couple. When she expresses doubt, Mr. Philpots pulls out their photo album to show her their wedding pictures from 1997—13 years ago.

Michelle was involved in motorcycle and car accidents in 1985 and 1990, respectively, which caused her brain damage. Her memory only extends back to 1994, and anything that happens after that is completely forgotten the next day. This condition is reminiscent of the 2004 film *50 First Dates*, in which Adam Sandler’s character tries to win over Drew Barrymore’s character, who loses her daily memory after a car accident.

**Sticky Notes to Aid Memory**

Michelle relies on hundreds of sticky notes and the reminder function on her phone’s calendar to keep track of her daily schedule and tasks. Everything she does or everyone she meets must be recorded for future reference. When she occasionally goes out, she even carries a GPS device preloaded with her home address.

Neuroscientist Dr. Nestor from the University of Cambridge explained that Michelle suffers from a rare form of anterograde amnesia. However, there are some silver linings—for instance, she never minds TV reruns, and every joke is hilarious because it feels like the first time she’s hearing it. She currently volunteers for a charity, caring for people with disabilities three days a week.
