Finnish research has found that pregnant women who consume licorice may increase the likelihood of their children developing high blood pressure, diabetes, or obesity later in life.
Researchers examined the levels of cortisol, a hormone, in a group of eight-year-old children. The results showed that children whose mothers frequently ate licorice during pregnancy had cortisol levels 30% higher by age eight compared to those whose mothers did not consume licorice. Cortisol helps the body cope with stress but is also linked to conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.
Licorice is used to sweeten foods or medicines and is commonly found in throat lozenges. Researchers advise pregnant women to be cautious and avoid excessive licorice intake. They warn that consuming as little as 0.5 grams of licorice per week could potentially affect the fetus.
