Attention to those who love exotic-flavored instant noodles! The Taipei County Health Bureau has discovered that a commercially available Indonesian brand of instant noodles contains the preservative benzoic acid in both its noodles and soy sauce packets. This corrosive strong acid, typically used in cosmetic lotions, can damage the liver and cause acidosis if ingested. Even more alarming is that 1,000 tons of these noodles have already entered the market since January of last year.
The Taipei County Health Bureau has launched a large-scale inspection, pulling all three flavors—original, spicy, and satay—off the shelves. What exactly is wrong with these noodles? We opened a pack of the original Indonesian instant noodles and found that while the noodles and soy sauce packets look no different from those in Taiwanese instant noodles, they tested positive for benzoic acid, a preservative that should only appear in cosmetic lotions. Since this preservative is meant for cosmetics, its corrosiveness and acidity are several times stronger than food-grade preservatives, potentially causing liver damage and acidosis if consumed in large quantities.
However, when we prepared a bowl, the aroma was enticing, and the taste was quite good. With up to seven flavor options and a cheap price—less than NT$6 per pack—these noodles are popular not only among Southeast Asian communities but also with local Taiwanese consumers. Over the past year, 1,000 tons of these preservative-laden noodles have entered the market, most of which have already been sold and consumed.
The Health Bureau is conducting a full investigation, strictly requiring the manufacturer to remove all remaining stock from warehouses and halt sales. Consumers are also advised to stop consuming any of these Indonesian instant noodles if they have them at home.
