(Central News Agency reporter Chen Xingman, Hong Kong, 18th) Children refusing to go to school and procrastinating on homework? Be careful, they might be suffering from "Sensory Integration Dysfunction"! According to a report by Guangzhou's "Yangcheng Evening News," statistics show that over 30% of children in Guangzhou suffer from this condition. Experts analyze that this is closely related to modern mothers choosing cesarean sections and not breastfeeding to maintain their figures.
The report points out that one case involves a six-year-old girl named An An, a first-grader at a primary school in Guangzhou. Every morning before school, she would cry and make a fuss, and this has continued for three months since the start of the school year. After diagnostic tests, doctors found that An An suffers from "Sensory Integration Dysfunction."
She has a strong tactile defensiveness and dislikes being touched, let alone hugged. Additionally, after communicating with An An's parents, doctors learned that she is very dependent on her family and refuses to leave their side, which is related to her parents' overprotection since childhood.
Another case involves a nine-year-old boy named Jia Huang, a second-grader who has been out of school for half a year. He is unable to concentrate in class, often makes strange noises, runs in and out of the classroom without regard for others, and harasses other students. His parents had no choice but to withdraw him from school.
After testing, doctors diagnosed Jia Huang with "Sensory Integration Dysfunction." Due to a lack of timely treatment, he has developed a certain level of psychological障碍, harboring hostility towards teachers and classmates.
Lin Jianfen, a senior instructor at the Children's Psychological Training Base of Guangzhou Second People's Hospital, pointed out that "Sensory Integration Dysfunction" refers to the inability of external sensory information to be properly integrated in the nervous system, leading to disharmony in the body's functioning. This affects the maturation of children's learning abilities and their adaptation to the external environment, resulting in psychological障碍.
According to statistics, the incidence of "Sensory Integration Dysfunction" in modern cities is as high as 10% to 30%. Clinical observations by Guangzhou medical institutions show that the incidence rate among children in Guangzhou is as high as 30%.
Lin Jianfen stated that research institutions both domestically and internationally have found that in advanced cities, more and more mothers are choosing cesarean sections and not breastfeeding to maintain their figures, which is a significant factor contributing to the increase in Sensory Integration Dysfunction among children.
She pointed out that children born via cesarean section miss out on the first and most important tactile contact of "birth canal compression." Without breastfeeding, children's skin lacks the "skin-to-skin contact" with their mothers, both of which are detrimental to the development of their tactile senses.
Additionally, many parents overprotect their children, artificially disrupting the natural developmental processes of touching, crawling, rolling, tumbling, jumping, and other behaviors. If children do not crawl when they should, they may later experience poor coordination and balance. If they are not allowed to cry when they should, their oral muscles may lack exercise, leading to weak cardiopulmonary function and even affecting their language expression abilities.
Lin Jianfen stated that children with "Sensory Integration Dysfunction" have particular difficulty concentrating, poor memory, are forgetful, have poor academic performance, procrastinate on homework, are mischievous, impulsive, and risk-taking, but have poor fine motor skills, such as difficulty tying shoelaces or buttoning clothes, stuttering, and poor verbal expression. Some are easily nervous, timid, withdrawn, stubborn, prone to crying, unsociable, picky eaters, or prone to overeating.
In the past, some people diagnosed these issues as hyperactivity and treated children with medication and injections, but with little effect, and it could even lead to developmental issues. Some parents believe these are personality issues and that the children are deliberately disobedient, resorting to scolding and hitting, causing physical and psychological trauma to the children.
The report cites Zhang Shengjun, a psychological counselor at the Children's Psychological Training Base of Guangzhou Second People's Hospital, who stated that children showing signs of "Sensory Integration Dysfunction" should be treated early, with the best treatment window being between the ages of three and thirteen.Zhang Shengjun stated that among the children with "sensory integration dysfunction" they have encountered, many have not received timely intervention, which has affected their intellectual development and learning abilities. This has led to poor academic foundations, delayed psychological development, and interpersonal relationship disorders, resulting in issues such as school aversion, truancy, and lying. In severe cases, it can lead to conduct disorders. As these children grow up, their conduct disorders may persist as personality disorders, making them more susceptible to criminal behavior.
