The New Taipei City Health Bureau recently conducted spot checks on commercially available soy milk and found that some vendors illegally added artificial sweeteners, commonly known as "sweetener," resulting in a fine of NT$30,000. Toxicology experts warn that while sweetener can enhance the flavor of soy milk, long-term consumption can harm the kidneys and digestive system, and may even be carcinogenic. How can you tell the difference? Soy milk adulterated with sweetener not only fails to quench thirst but can also leave you feeling parched.

On a hot day, a cup of chilled soy milk is a favorite choice for many. However, the New Taipei City Health Bureau discovered a soy milk factory hidden in the Xinzhuang Industrial Area that was adding "sweetener" to its soy milk before selling it.

Sweetener, formally known as an artificial sweetener, is 30 to 40 times sweeter than sucrose. It is generally permitted in small amounts in preserved fruits and carbonated beverages. Although it enhances flavor, excessive consumption can harm the body. Breakfast vendors who insist on selling freshly ground soy milk say the difference between natural and artificial flavors is stark.

Traditional soy milk production is time-consuming and labor-intensive. From selecting beans, soaking, grinding, boiling, to filtering, each step requires manpower and considerable time. Some vendors adhere to the slow, meticulous process, believing that "natural is best" and that this approach best retains customers. However, unscrupulous businesses cut corners by adding sweetener, tarnishing their reputation. The extent of such adulterated products in the market is still under investigation by the Health Bureau.
