People who enjoy canned food or energy drinks should be extra cautious! The plastic lining inside metal bottle caps of these products may leach plasticizers when in contact with food. The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has now released new regulations requiring manufacturers to avoid using PVC materials in these linings to prevent plasticizer contamination.
Before opening a metal bottle cap to enjoy your food, you might want to think twice. Many manufacturers use PVC for the transparent lining inside these caps, which could release plasticizers when touching food. Consumers have been urging the government to take action, as these metal caps are widely seen in the market—not only on canned foods like gluten or pickled cucumbers but also on many energy drinks.
Despite the safety concerns, neither the BSMI (responsible for container regulations), the Department of Health (overseeing food safety), nor the Environmental Protection Agency (managing source control) has claimed jurisdiction over the issue.
Wu Qirui, Technical Specialist at BSMI: "Our standards are voluntary and serve as a reference for all parties. According to Article 4 of the Standards Act, national standards are currently voluntary."
With a wide variety of metal-capped products on the market, the BSMI’s guidelines remain merely advisory. The lack of strict enforcement leaves consumers questioning who is truly safeguarding their food safety.
