A German physicist named Karl, who doubted the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in bone-setting, made a bet with a TCM practitioner in Guiyang. If the practitioner could get a patient with a femoral neck fracture to walk within a month, Karl would pay 1,000 euros (approximately NT$40,000). In the end, Karl lost the bet. He marveled at the profound depth of TCM and expressed his willingness to promote this miraculous healing art worldwide.

Karl mentioned that last November, he visited a friend surnamed Wang in Beijing and was surprised to find that Wang had suffered a right femoral neck fracture due to a car accident. Western doctors had suggested inserting steel pins for treatment, but Wang, who firmly believed in TCM, first sought treatment from Guo Xinglai, a member of the China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Karl, however, was skeptical, saying, "TCM works too slowly. If the condition worsens due to delay, the patient might end up in a wheelchair for life."

A femoral neck fracture is a common hip injury, but due to the high risk of nonunion and avascular necrosis of the femoral head, it is difficult to heal in a short time. Nevertheless, Guo Xinglai gladly accepted Karl's challenge. He pointed out that the patient initially not only suffered unbearable leg pain but also couldn't even urinate or defecate. After acupuncture and herbal medicine treatments, both the pain and bowel issues were resolved.

After nine sessions of acupuncture and herbal applications, the patient surnamed Wang was able to walk indoors with crutches. Karl was astonished, saying, "The femoral head bears the body's weight, and the fracture must be fixed and supported with steel pins to heal. I never imagined TCM could set the bones without surgery."

Karl added that after this experience, he had become a complete "fan" of TCM. He plans to introduce friends to seek treatment in Guiyang and will promote TCM worldwide in the future, letting Westerners know about this miraculous medical practice.
