The "LiveScience" website reported that the latest research shows women are more inclined to choose sexy "bad boys" over reliable "nice guys" during ovulation due to hormonal influences.
Kristina Durante, a researcher at The University of Texas at San Antonio, stated: "Previous studies have shown that during the week near ovulation, women are attracted to sexy, rebellious men like George Clooney and James Bond."
Durante added: "However, until now, it hasn’t been clear why women would think it’s wise to pursue long-term relationships with this type of man."
The study was published in the *Journal of Personality and Social Psychology*.
Researchers asked women to view online dating profiles of sexy and dependable men during both high and low fertility periods. They were also asked to predict how much these men would contribute as fathers—such as helping with childcare, grocery shopping, cooking, or housework—based on their own perceptions.
Women near ovulation believed that sexy men would put more effort into household responsibilities.
Durante explained: "Hormones during ovulation lead women to deceive themselves into thinking that sexy bad boys would become devoted partners and better fathers. When hormones peak, a player might seem like 'the one.'"
In a follow-up study, researchers had women interact directly with actors playing either sexy bad boys or reliable father figures during high and low fertility periods. Once again, ovulating women believed the bad boys would invest more in childcare—but only if they were their own partners. If the bad boys were with other women, this perception disappeared.
Durante said: "When asked how bad boys would behave as fathers with other women, women quickly pointed out their flaws. But if they imagined having a child with the bad boy themselves, ovulating women believed the charming, adventurous man would be a great father."
