A must-have tool for children when writing—erasers—were found to contain over 6% plasticizers! Out of 30 samples tested by the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI), two exceeded the plasticizer limit by 370 to 409 times. Deputy Director Chuang Su-chin stated that, in accordance with Articles 36 and 38 of the Consumer Protection Act, the manufacturers have been ordered to recall the products and make improvements, destroy them, or return them within a specified period.
The BSMI recently purchased 30 brands of erasers from department stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, and bookstores in Hualien for testing. Results showed that all samples met national standards for "heavy metal content." However, two failed to comply with the "plasticizer content" limits. Additionally, six products violated "Chinese labeling" regulations, lacking essential details such as the original manufacturer's name, address, and place of origin.
Parents should be cautious when purchasing erasers, as improper selection could harm children's health. Phthalates, the most common plasticizers in the plastics industry, are environmental hormones that may disrupt children's endocrine balance and function, leading to feminization in males and increasing the risk of breast cancer in females.
The BSMI explained that products failing the plasticizer test have been recalled under the Consumer Protection Act, with manufacturers required to improve, destroy, or return them within a deadline. Violators may face fines ranging from NT$60,000 to NT$1.5 million under Article 58 of the same law.
For incomplete "Chinese labeling," the BSMI will demand corrections within a deadline. Failure to comply may result in fines of NT$100,000 to NT$1 million under the Commodity Inspection Act.
Deputy Director Chuang urged manufacturers to replace phthalate plasticizers with safer alternatives and ensure accurate Chinese labeling to protect consumer rights. Consumers are advised to choose erasers with complete Chinese labeling for safety.
