Researchers at the University of Cambridge have found that fish oil supplements do not help reduce the risk of stroke—only consuming fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can achieve this effect.

The researchers noted that eating two to four servings of fatty fish per week can reduce the risk of stroke by 6%, while consuming more than five servings per week can lower it by 12%.

Fish are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which effectively reduce the likelihood of stroke. Tuna, salmon, and mackerel are all high in Omega-3, and many people frequently take Omega-3 supplements in hopes of lowering their stroke risk. However, researchers pointed out that there is no evidence to suggest that Omega-3 supplements reduce stroke risk.

After collecting and analyzing 38 studies covering 800,000 people across 15 countries, the researchers found that eating fish can effectively prevent stroke. Team member Chowdhury stated, "A 6% reduction may not seem high, but considering the prevalence of stroke, the number of people benefiting would be substantial."

In a report published in the "British Medical Journal," the researchers stated there is no evidence that Omega-3 supplements prevent stroke. However, Chowdhury emphasized that it is still too early to conclude that Omega-3 supplements are entirely useless, as other evidence suggests they may help improve cognitive function and diabetes management. He said, "It's not just about Omega-3. Other nutrients in fish, such as vitamin D and selenium, are also highly beneficial to the body."
