Some imported white rice in the United States has been found to contain lead levels exceeding safety standards. Taiwanese rice exported to the U.S. was also included in the testing list and was named as one of the most problematic sources. Approximately 7% of the white rice consumed in the U.S. is imported. A research team from Monmouth University in New Jersey tested several packaged imported white rice brands available in the U.S. market, with samples covering seven countries, including Taiwan and China. The university's testing revealed that some samples exceeded the U.S. safety limits for lead content, with rice from Taiwan and mainland China being the most severely affected. The Food and Drug Administration will conduct further verification.
Lead can damage multiple organs and the central nervous system, posing particularly severe risks to children. Rice requires extensive irrigation during growth, making it more susceptible to water pollution compared to other crops.
Researchers attribute this issue to farming practices. In some countries, especially India and China, agricultural irrigation includes untreated sewage and even industrial wastewater. The study notes that developed nations often export electronic waste to developing countries, but with the globalization of food markets, pollution from industrial waste exports is now returning through contaminated food.
This study highlights the need for global regulations in food production and marketing. Currently, the only internationally recognized food safety mechanism is the *Codex Alimentarius* established by the United Nations, but it is informal and lacks binding enforcement.
