At the youthful age of 26, Miss Shen, who neither smoked nor drank, was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer. After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, she initially believed she had recovered, only to be told after treatment that her cancer had reached the terminal stage, metastasizing to the peritoneum and spreading to her liver and lymph nodes. At the time, doctors estimated she had only three months left to live. But she refused to give up. By adjusting her lifestyle and maintaining a positive mindset, she has now been medication-free for two years and has fully recovered.
Before being diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer, Miss Shen had no unhealthy habits and showed no abnormal physical symptoms. One day, she noticed an increasing frequency of dull stomach pain. A medical visit initially misdiagnosed her condition as food poisoning. As her health visibly deteriorated, she sought further examination, including a colonoscopy, which revealed the shocking truth: stage 2 colon cancer.
After surgery and six months of preventive chemotherapy, the young woman believed her body was recovering quickly. However, at the end of her treatment, she was devastated to learn that her cancer had progressed to the terminal stage, with a nearly 10 cm tumor near her peritoneum and metastases to her liver and lymph nodes.
Though doctors predicted she had only three months left, she relied on lifestyle changes, a shift in mindset, targeted therapy, and chemotherapy. Three months later, her tumor had shrunk to 2.37 cm. Two months after that, surgery removed the remaining mass, which measured less than 2 cm. Post-surgery, Miss Shen chose to stop all treatments and medications, relying solely on her willpower. Today, she is fully recovered, with no trace of her past as a terminal cancer patient.
"Your own changes are the key to health!" Miss Shen shared that after receiving the terminal diagnosis, she resolved to overhaul her lifestyle. She started by altering her diet, consuming only natural fruits and vegetables while avoiding processed and microwave foods. She ensured eight hours of sleep by going to bed at 11 p.m. every night. Previously averse to exercise, she began hiking daily and traveling frequently, keeping her spirits high. She emphasizes that cancer is not terrifying—what matters is early detection, timely treatment, and a genuine commitment to transforming one’s attitude toward life.Early screening is the first step in preventing colorectal cancer. In light of this, the Taiwan Colorectal Cancer Patient Association and the Kaohsiung City Government Health Bureau will jointly host the "Joyful Gut Love, Health GOGO" event on May 19. The event will include screenings for colorectal cancer, oral cancer, cervical cancer, and breast cancer, as well as lung function carbon monoxide testing and BMI testing. Citizens aged 50-69 who have not undergone health check-ups in the past two years can bring their National Health Insurance cards to participate in the screenings and take charge of their health!
