With the Dragon Boat Festival approaching, the Health Bureau conducted inspections of festival foods such as preserved radish, dried shrimp, and bamboo leaves sold in the county. Out of 26 samples, three failed to meet standards, all due to excessive preservatives in preserved radish. Two of these products originated from Chiayi County, and one from Hualien County. In addition to notifying businesses to remove the products from shelves, the cases have been referred to the respective local health bureaus for further action.

The Food and Drug Administration Section of the Health Bureau stated that in early May, inspections were carried out on festival foods sold at traditional markets, rice dumpling vendors, and supermarkets. The preserved radish sampled from Tongguan Supermarket in Chishang Township contained excessive preservatives, while similar violations were found in preserved radish from Yimin Hang and Shan Zhong Chuanqi in Taitung City. The Tongguan Supermarket product was sourced from Tongguan Fresh Supermarket Processing Center in Hualien County, while the other two came from Chiayi County. Businesses have been instructed to remove non-compliant products, and the respective health bureaus have been notified for follow-up.

The Food and Drug Section recommends that consumers concerned about ingesting excessive preservatives in preserved radish can blanch the radish multiple times to reduce potential harm or consider making their own preserved radish at home.

Additionally, when making alkaline rice dumplings, some people use "borax" (commonly known as "bing xi") to enhance the chewiness, toughness, and elasticity of the dumplings. However, borax is toxic and can cause severe symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, headaches, and nausea. As an alternative, "sodium trimetaphosphate" can be used. Those in need can obtain it from local health centers or the Food and Drug Administration Section of the Health Bureau.
