UHO Health Network – August 30, 2013 (Comprehensive report by UHO Health Network News Department)

In July, the New Taipei City Health Bureau conducted inspections on 60 products, including 45 pickled foods and 15 processed salted fish, sold in supermarkets, hypermarkets, and traditional markets within the city. Among the pickled foods, seven samples of "yellow radish," one sample of "shredded pickled mustard," and one sample of "pickled cabbage" were found to exceed the permissible levels of the preservative benzoic acid. The Health Bureau immediately required the businesses to recall and remove the non-compliant products from shelves.

The Health Bureau further explained that one of the "yellow radish" samples was sourced from a local supplier. As the supplier failed to provide upstream supplier information, the Health Bureau imposed a fine ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$3 million in accordance with Article 47, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 11 of the Food Sanitation Management Act. The remaining eight cases have been referred to the respective local health bureaus for follow-up. If violations are confirmed, penalties under Article 18 of the Food Sanitation Management Act may apply, including fines from NT$30,000 to NT$3 million. In severe cases, businesses may be ordered to suspend operations, cease business for a specified period, or have their company, commercial, or factory registrations partially or fully revoked. Businesses whose registrations are revoked may not reapply for registration within one year.

Lin Guan-zhen, head of the Food and Drug Administration Division, stated that manufacturers add benzoates to pickled foods to prevent spoilage and extend shelf life. After entering the human body, most benzoic acid is excreted in urine within 9 to 15 hours. Therefore, products within legal limits are harmless to health, though individuals with poor liver function should still reduce intake. Excessive consumption of benzoic acid may cause symptoms such as drooling, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and rapid heartbeat.
