Weng Hongxuan / Taipei Report

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced the latest results of its animal drug residue inspections in food products today (4th). Among 147 samples of poultry, livestock, and aquatic products tested in August and September, Jin Fu Frozen Original Flavor Meatballs from Hsinchu were found to contain 0.32 ppm of benzylpenicillin, exceeding the standard limit of 0.05 ppm by about six times. Although health authorities will impose penalties under the Food Sanitation Management Act, investigations revealed that the entire batch of 1,200 catties (approximately 720 kg) of meatballs had already been sold out and may have been consumed by the public.

The FDA conducted a monitoring program for animal drug residues in commercial food products, testing for 114 types of veterinary drugs. Out of the samples, 146 products met the standards. The only non-compliant product was the frozen original flavor meatballs from Jin Fu Food Store in Zhubei City, Hsinchu County, which were found to contain benzylpenicillin levels six times higher than the permitted limit.

Zhou Xiuguan, Deputy Director of the FDA’s Central Region Management Center, stated that benzylpenicillin is an approved drug, and the超标 in this product is suspected to be due to insufficient withdrawal periods observed by pig farmers, leading to drug residues. The Yunlin County Health Bureau will impose fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$3 million on the pork supplier.

However, Zhou Xiuguan noted that the batch of meatballs found to exceed antibiotic limits weighed approximately 1,200 catties and had already been completely sold, meaning they were likely consumed by customers.

The FDA explained that benzylpenicillin is a β-lactam antibiotic effective against infections caused by Streptococcus, Neisseria, various aerobic bacteria, and spirochetes. However, it may also cause side effects such as hives, skin rashes, and throat swelling. According to FDA data, the acceptable daily intake of benzylpenicillin is 30 μg per person. Based on the detected levels in this sample, a 60 kg adult would need to consume about 0.09 kg of the contaminated meatballs to exceed the limit.
