Some parents worry that their child's fever might get too high and give them medication on their own. Regarding this, pharmacist Chen Yixiu from the medication consultation department mentioned that some parents believe fever can affect the brain or have adverse effects on the body, so they directly administer fever-reducing medication to their child. She advises against self-medication to avoid excessive dosage, which could increase the burden on the liver and kidneys or even cause harm.

Pharmacist Chen pointed out that since parents are not doctors, they often don’t know the correct dosage, which is typically calculated based on weight. In the U.S., for example, about 85% of parents give fever-reducing medication to their children, but half of them may provide incorrect doses. Additionally, medication should always be used under the guidance of a doctor or pharmacist.

Pharmacist Chen noted that many illnesses can cause fever, making it one of the most common clinical symptoms. Fever is a protective instinctive response and a symptom produced by the body when fighting infection. However, it is a symptom, not a disease itself. Therefore, when someone has a fever, they should consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment to address the root cause—this is the correct approach.

A mild fever does not harm the brain or directly damage other organs. Fever is often one of the symptoms that appear after an illness begins. It’s not just colds—many diseases can cause fever. Thus, when a child has a fever, parents should promptly take them to the doctor for diagnosis and treatment to identify the cause and address it properly.
