The Taipei City Health Bureau announced on the 22nd the results of inspections conducted on fresh-cut fruit stalls in night markets from October to December of the previous year. A total of 47 samples were tested, with 13 found to be non-compliant. Among these, 9 contained the disinfectant hydrogen peroxide, and 4 were illegally sweetened with sodium cyclamate. The Health Bureau has ordered the vendors to remove the non-compliant products and will impose fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$3 million under the Food Sanitation Management Act.

The Health Bureau stated that among the 13 non-compliant products, 9 (pears and candied dates) tested positive for hydrogen peroxide, 3 (green mangoes and persimmons) contained the sweetener sodium cyclamate, and 1 green mango sample was found to contain both saccharin and sodium cyclamate.

The Health Bureau reminded the public that low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide are only mildly irritating and rarely cause obvious poisoning symptoms. However, excessive consumption may lead to gastrointestinal irritation, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloating, and could even result in ulcers, bleeding, or inflammation of the mucous membranes.

Excessive intake of the artificial sweetener saccharin often causes dry mouth and excessive stomach acid, leading to gastrointestinal discomfort. Saccharin is about 30 to 60 times sweeter than sucrose and is used in preserved fruits, melon seeds, carbonated drinks, sugar substitute tablets, powders, and special nutritional foods. However, long-term consumption may increase the burden on kidney function.
