According to Taiwanese media reports, David Tao was involved in a car accident in the United States years ago and sought treatment from renowned orthopedic surgeon Chen Hongyi after returning to Taiwan. Unexpectedly, this led to a stiff finger as a side effect. Tao believes it was medical negligence and has sued the doctor.

**David Tao: Surgery Caused Finger Stiffness**

In early 2007, just before a concert, Tao suffered minor injuries after slipping while riding a motorcycle in Los Angeles. At the time, he didn’t notice anything unusual and didn’t think much of it. The next day, while on a flight back to Taiwan, he noticed his right index finger was swollen and painful, resembling a small eggplant. Upon landing, he immediately went to Taipei Adventist Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a "closed fracture of the right index finger" and underwent surgery the same day. He was discharged after one day of observation.

Tao stated that after recovery, he found his index finger had become stiff and numb, making it difficult to grip heavy objects and affecting his ability to play instruments like the guitar and piano. For a singer-songwriter, this was a significant blow. He believes the stiffness was caused by the implanted steel pin being too long.

**Doctor: David Tao Did Not Follow Post-Op Instructions**

Chen Hongyi, currently the director of orthopedics at Taipei City Hospital’s Yangming Branch, stated that he had fulfilled his duty to inform Tao before the surgery and repeatedly advised him to rest and return for follow-ups after the operation. However, Tao insisted on being discharged the day after surgery and went on a tour. Two years later, he sued Chen, which the doctor found "very regrettable."

Chen explained that American doctors had failed to diagnose Tao’s condition, and it was only after he examined Tao that a comminuted fracture at the finger joint was identified. Before the surgery, Chen informed Tao that the optimal treatment window was closing and he needed to quickly decide between surgery or a cast. Tao immediately chose surgery.

Chen added that after the operation, he specifically instructed Tao that the bone would take four to six weeks to heal and that he should avoid strenuous guitar playing during this period. He also emphasized the need for a follow-up to remove the pin, but Tao never returned. Now, Tao is turning against him, which Chen finds "deeply disheartening."
