Ting Hsin's toxic oil continues to poison Taiwan, with the country's largest beef importer, Shusen Company, also affected! 573 barbecue and steak restaurants have been impacted.
**Shusen’s Budget Steak Contaminated with Inferior Oil**
Shusen reported to the Taichung City Health Bureau on the 24th that from June 21 last year to the present, it had used 2,955 kilograms of "powdered beef tallow" purchased by Quanya from Ting Hsin. Of this, 2,866.14 kilograms were used to produce "Standard Budget Steak," totaling over 930,000 kilograms. More than 830,000 kilograms were sold through distributors to barbecue and steak restaurants. Whether any chain restaurant groups were affected remains under investigation.
The Taichung City Health Bureau inspected and sealed 3,060 kilograms of finished products, 102,571.1 kilograms of semi-finished products, and 206 packages of marinade. The remaining 88.86 kilograms of "powdered beef tallow" were returned to Quanya on October 24. Since Quanya’s headquarters is in Taipei, the case has been transferred to the Taipei City Health Bureau.
**Over 830,000 Kilograms Sold Across Taiwan**
Wang Mingli, Deputy Director of the Taipei City Health Bureau’s Food and Drug Division, stated that Shusen used powdered beef tallow to produce "processed steak" (commonly known as cheap steak in the market), sold under the name "Standard Budget Steak (Specification: Shaped and Formed, 1.1 cm)" with a frozen shelf life of six months. Chen Jingchuan, a professor at Meiho University’s Food Science Department, noted that manufacturers add beef tallow powder to enhance beef aroma and make the fat in restructured meat appear more abundant and evenly distributed.
Quanya stated that the "powdered beef tallow" produced before September this year was sourced from Australian beef tallow when purchasing raw materials from Ting Hsin, which also provided Australian certificates of origin and guarantees, not Vietnamese beef tallow.
The Food and Drug Administration pointed out that Ting Hsin imported Australian beef tallow between June last year and July this year. However, when asked to distinguish between Vietnamese and Australian beef tallow products, Ting Hsin staff admitted they could not tell the difference, raising the possibility of mixing. Yesterday, it was confirmed that Vietnamese beef tallow was feed-grade oil, and further verification of Quanya’s documentation is underway.
It is understood that Shusen’s owner, Zhou Mingzhao, is one of the founders of "My Home Steak," and "Noble Family" also once sourced meat from Shusen. Zhou also established the budget steak chain "Hata Steak" in Taichung, along with "Da Xi Hot Pot," "Extreme House Barbecue," and "Yimi Lan." Although the Health Bureau has obtained Shusen’s list of downstream vendors, the names are registered business titles and may differ from common market names, so they cannot be disclosed yet.
**Shusen Offers Refunds and Considers Compensation**
Shusen announced that starting immediately, refunds can be processed through eight distributors in Keelung, Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung, Hsinchu Qianyu, Tainan Chaoren, Changhua Senpin, and Kaohsiung Mingchuang. Consumers who have consumed Shusen’s "Standard Budget Steak" since May 1 this year, and can confirm through the restaurant that it was supplied by Shusen, may be eligible for compensation. For inquiries, consumers can call the Taipei Consumer Service Hotline at 02-27208777.
