Legislator Lin Shu-fen uncovered that Uni-President Group purchased over 400 tons of problematic Vietnamese coconut oil from Ting Hsin in 2012 and 2013, using it to produce 23 products, including Uni-President Pudding and Ruisui Fresh Milk Ice Cream. She criticized the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for only reporting 47 tons, accusing them of shielding big corporations. Uni-President admitted that its subsidiary, Tzung Qing Company, unknowingly bought tainted coconut oil from Ting Hsin and will seek compensation from Ting Hsin for a second time.
The soft and smooth Uni-President Pudding, enjoyed by many adults and children, has now been exposed to contain problematic coconut oil sourced from Ting Hsin.
Legislator Lin Shu-fen presented documents from the Tainan City Health Bureau, revealing that Uni-President purchased 474 tons of coconut oil from Ting Hsin in 2012 to make 23 products, including Uni-President Pudding, Ruisui Fresh Milk Ice Cream, European Chocolate Cake, and California Raisin Toast. The last batch had an expiration date of May 27 this year, meaning these problematic products have either expired or already been consumed.
Acting FDA Director-General Chiang Yu-mei stated, "The 47 tons of coconut oil were part of 110 tons imported by Ting Hsin's Great Happiness Company and sold to Uni-President."
Legislator Lin Shu-fen (DPP) countered, "It wasn’t 47 tons—it was 474 tons. If you’re going to lie and cover up, at least do it more skillfully." She accused the FDA of protecting Uni-President and further revealed that in 2013, Uni-President bought another 442 tons of coconut oil from Ting Hsin, which the Ministry of Health and Welfare has yet to disclose.
