65-year-old Li Tai-an learned she had terminal ovarian cancer 14 years ago but remained calm. After undergoing chemotherapy and being discharged from the hospital, she sold all her possessions and used her savings of several million dollars to travel the world as "a farewell gift to herself." By broadening her horizons and relaxing her mind, she unknowingly overcame the illness. Now, though she has spent all her savings, she has "earned" a healthy body and cherishes it deeply.
"My personality is quite optimistic—I believe living long isn’t as important as living vibrantly," Li Tai-an said. When she first heard from her doctor 14 years ago that she had ovarian cancer, a disease with a high mortality rate, it was like a bombshell, but she didn’t break down. During the year she spent receiving chemotherapy in the hospital, she constantly pondered, "What dreams have I yet to fulfill?"
She loved traveling, so after being discharged, she sold her house and car to fund her trips, racing against time. She opened a map, marked the countries she wanted to visit, booked her tickets, and set off. She traveled to the UK, the U.S., Turkey, Australia, Mexico, China’s Yangtze River Three Gorges, and various Southeast Asian countries.
"Only after broadening my horizons did I realize how small humans truly are," Li Tai-an reflected. Her most profound memory from her travels was riding a hot air balloon in Turkey and looking down at the surreal rock formations below. "The awe and emotion in my heart at that moment" made her realize that "people work hard to earn money just to fulfill their dreams and enrich their souls."
She also "checked in" along the way, uploading travel photos to Facebook to share with friends and family. Many were shocked to see her looking more energetic and radiant the more she traveled, saying, "You’d never guess she’s a cancer survivor."
Li Tai-an exhausted her savings over eight years of travel, becoming "penniless," but she didn’t mind. Though the money was gone, she gained health and a "very wealthy" soul. She admitted that if not for her desire to "visit more countries," she might have "gone to Suzhou to sell duck eggs" (a euphemism for death) long ago.
