Elderly individuals taking sedative medications may not only experience cognitive confusion but also face a potential link to Alzheimer's disease. A study published in the *British Medical Journal* found that among seniors who took sedatives for more than three months, 51% were prone to cognitive confusion. The study further suggested a potential association between sedatives used for insomnia and anxiety and Alzheimer's. Consequently, the American Geriatrics Society recommends considering more natural methods to treat anxiety and insomnia.
According to *CBS San Francisco*, the research team, composed of scholars from universities in France and Canada, analyzed 1,796 medical records from Quebec’s health insurance database, tracking patients for over six years. These records were then compared with data from 7,184 individuals aged over 66, accounting for differences in age, gender, and health conditions, to investigate the relationship between Alzheimer’s and benzodiazepine-based sedatives.
The study revealed that, compared to those who never took such medications, seniors who used sedatives for more than three months had a 51% higher likelihood of cognitive impairment. Those taking higher doses of anti-anxiety and insomnia drugs were also more prone to dementia. However, the study could not establish a direct causal link. Lead researcher Dr. Sophie stated, "This may simply reflect that Alzheimer’s patients experience insomnia and anxiety in the early stages, leading to medication use."
Despite the absence of a direct causal relationship, these findings could influence how doctors diagnose and treat insomnia and anxiety in the elderly. Dr. Sophie advised that physicians should carefully consider the risks and benefits before prescribing sedatives to older patients.
The American Geriatrics Society has warned that sedative use may increase the risk of dizziness, confusion, and accidents. Sociological reports have shown that seniors taking sedatives are twice as likely to suffer falls, fractures, car accidents, hospitalizations, or even death compared to those not taking such medications. Therefore, the society recommends exploring more natural alternatives for treating anxiety and insomnia.
