Lin Yude, a 60-year-old practicing physician, incurred over NT$70 million in debt due to failed stock speculation. In desperation, he allegedly administered a fourth-grade controlled narcotic known as "milk injection," an anesthetic, to patients. Three of them died suddenly after receiving the injections. Authorities tracked down Lin on the 22nd, and prosecutors sought his detention, but the Taichung District Court granted him bail for NT$200,000.
**10 Drug Addicts Daily, 3 Fatalities**
Taichung District Prosecutor Hong Guochao discovered during an autopsy in September last year that the deceased had died from a "milk injection" administered at Yude Clinic in Taiping District the day before. The victim stopped breathing and was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.
Further investigations revealed that between June last year and April this year, three individuals had received "milk injections" at Yude Clinic and stopped breathing. Two were sent to the hospital but died the next day, while the third died on the spot at the clinic.
Authorities found that Lin, facing financial ruin from stock losses, exploited his license to handle controlled substances to purchase large quantities of Propofol (commonly called "milk injection") from suppliers. He mixed it with other drugs like Pavulon and Alimemazine to reduce side effects and used butterfly needles and syringes for easy administration.
**Some Injected 20 Doses a Day**
Lin bought the drug at a cost of NT$150 per set and sold each dose for NT$400 to NT$600, bypassing any medical examination. He either injected addicts directly or sold the drug to them for self-administration. Some addicts reportedly injected up to 20 doses in a single day, far exceeding safe limits.
To prevent further deaths from abuse, prosecutors directed the Taichung Coast Guard and local police to investigate. Lin, originally practicing in Taiping, moved his clinic to Dali this month after the third fatality to avoid suspicion. When authorities raided the clinic, they caught Lin injecting a repeat user.
Lin initially claimed he was unaware that "milk injection" was classified as a fourth-grade narcotic, citing his medical license and legal access to controlled substances. He later admitted administering the drug for over a year, with about 10 addicts visiting daily, most receiving multiple doses. This matched the seized Propofol quantities.
Investigations revealed Lin also offered a "discounted service" of NT$300 per dose for those using their National Health Insurance cards, compared to NT$400–NT$600 for cash payments. Whether he falsified medical records for profit remains under investigation. Prosecutors sought detention, citing serious charges and witness tampering risks, but the court granted bail, deeming Lin unlikely to flee as a practicing physician.
