Medications for treating asthma all contain steroids, which have many side effects, causing distress to patients. Therefore, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has successfully developed a new asthma medication using traditional Chinese medicine formulas. This new drug does not contain steroids, has no side effects, and can even alter the body's constitution to completely eradicate asthma. Currently, the drug is in the human trial phase. Once approved, it is expected to generate an annual output value of 4 to 5 billion Taiwanese dollars.
Li Lianzi, head of the Medical Technology Division at ITRI, said, "Sometimes conducting trials is like playing the lottery, haha! The success rate isn't that high."
Speaking about the journey to develop the new drug, Li Lianzi, head of the Medical Technology Division at ITRI, likened himself to Shennong tasting hundreds of herbs. His determination stemmed from a childhood trauma, driving him to create life-saving medications.
Li Lianzi recalled, "When I was young, I was playing with my little cousin when suddenly he collapsed to the ground and started wheezing. That's when I realized asthma is a very serious illness and can be fatal."
Although it wasn't winning the lottery, the mood was even better because the trial results were highly successful. The domestically developed traditional Chinese medicine for asthma received certification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May this year and is currently undergoing the first phase of human trials.
Li Lianzi explained, "Anti-allergy and bronchodilator medications both have rapid side effects. Traditional Chinese medicine, on the other hand, focuses on improving the body's constitution. After treatment, the patient's constitution improves, and the condition does not recur."
This marks the first time Taiwan has independently developed a new drug, and it is the world's first medication made using traditional Chinese medicine formulas. Animal trials have already proven its effectiveness to be superior to steroids. If it successfully passes human trials, it is expected to create a business opportunity worth 5 billion Taiwanese dollars within a year.
