According to a Reuters report from New York on the 1st: The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases stated at its annual meeting in Boston that experiments conducted on animals have proven a definite link between sugary soft drinks and the development of liver disease.

Dr. Bergheim and researchers from the University of Hohenheim in Germany tested the effects of sugar-added water on the livers of mice. They allowed one group of mice to freely consume sugar water, while another group was fed a solution containing artificial sweeteners.

The mice that consumed sugary drinks ate less but had higher overall calorie intake and body weight. Examinations of the mice's livers showed that fatty liver disease was more common in the group that drank sugary beverages, and the condition was worse if the sugar consumed was a type called fructose.

The research team concluded: "These data support previous hypotheses that consuming large amounts of fructose may not only harm the liver due to overeating but may also be directly toxic."

Dr. Bishai, chairman of the Public Policy Committee of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, pointed out that the obesity epidemic is one of the reasons why more and more Americans are suffering from liver disease. The consumption of high-fructose corn syrup in soft drinks has surged over the past decade. "This study shows that liver disease is not only a consequence of obesity or fat intake; sugar is also one of the culprits that cause the disease."
