Do you know that the free flu vaccine provided by the Department of Health for first and second-grade elementary school children this year contains mercury? Officials and doctors say it's OK and there's no problem, but some well-informed parents are already worried, fearing whether their precious children might have allergies or an increased risk of autism after receiving the vaccine.
Among the 2.69 million doses of flu vaccine purchased by the Centers for Disease Control from four major pharmaceutical companies both domestic and international this year, the majority still contain mercury, with a not high proportion of mercury-free vaccines. Moreover, all the multi-dose vaccines provided to first and second-grade elementary school children contain mercury.
The Centers for Disease Control of the Department of Health stated that many vaccines administered to infants and young children over the years have contained mercury, which is why the flu vaccine's mercury content was not specifically mentioned in the parental consent form; however, future vaccine purchases will strive to be mercury-free. Nevertheless, Lin Jieliang, director of the Clinical Toxicology Department at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, stated that mercury is a toxic element and raises concerns for children with allergic constitutions, and it is worrying if problems arise. He believes that officials should inform parents in detail beforehand.
Some parents have concerns
Zhang Xueling, director of the Pediatric Psychiatry Department at Chang Gung Children's Hospital, pointed out that the cause of autism is still undetermined, and therefore it is even more impossible to infer whether mercury is the cause or trigger of autism. Although many people are indeed discussing the relationship between mercury-containing vaccines and autism, there is still a lack of large-scale studies to confirm this, and there is no consensus in the world.
Zhang Xueling said that parents of children with autism often request trace element tests during outpatient visits. If a higher level of mercury is detected in the body, parents will take their children to the toxicology department for chelation therapy, attempting to expel the mercury from the body.
Doctors: Love your child, still get them vaccinated
Li Bingying, attending physician of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Department at National Taiwan University Hospital, pointed out that mercury is added to vaccines as a preservative, and the trace amount of mercury in the vaccine makes the flu vaccine safe to inject. Even if all the mercury in the routinely administered vaccines is added up, it is still within the safe range. He emphasized, "If you love them, get them vaccinated."
Shi Wenyi, deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control of the Department of Health, said that children with autism usually test higher for mercury, but there is no evidence as to where the mercury comes from, whether it is really caused by vaccines, and there has never been a report of harm from the mercury in vaccines, so parents can rest assured to have their children vaccinated.
