A cold air mass has arrived, bringing relatively abundant moisture, which led to the first snowfall of this winter on Yushan. Staff at the Yushan observation station reported that the snowflakes lasted for about half an hour, finally covering the mountain peaks with sporadic white snow. However, possibly due to the impact of global warming, the first snowfall on Yushan has been occurring later each year.
(Li Hexi reports)
The cold air mass has struck again, bringing with it a fair amount of moisture. According to observations by staff at the Yushan observation station, located at an altitude of over 3,800 meters, the first snow of this winter has begun to fall on the peaks of Yushan. The snowflakes lasted for about half an hour, with temperatures dropping to -3 degrees Celsius at one point. Although the weather in the mountains cleared up on the 25th, the temperatures remained quite low, hovering around zero degrees, allowing the peaks to finally display a scene of white snow. Analysis by the observation station staff, who have 27 years of experience, indicates that in previous years, the first snow on Yushan would typically occur around November. This year, it appeared at the end of December, about a month later than usual.
The trend of the first snow on Yushan occurring later each year may be related to global warming, a matter that deserves attention and investigation.
According to the weather bureau's forecast, a stronger cold front is expected to arrive this Saturday, the 28th. Whether it will bring more snow to the high mountain areas is still hard to predict, according to the Yushan observation station staff. It will depend on whether the new wave of northeast monsoon brings sufficient moisture.
