A top UN expert told the British "Observer" today that people should eat less meat to help combat climate change.
Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), told the Observer that people should start by not eating meat one day a week and then gradually reduce their meat consumption.
The 68-year-old Indian economist, who is a vegetarian, said that changing diets is important for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing the environmental issues related to raising cattle and other animals.
He said: "Initially, one day a week without meat, and then gradually reduce."
He said: "This is a direct and feasible action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the short term, and it is clearly the most attractive option."
He said that other small changes in lifestyle could also help combat climate change, but he did not elaborate.
He said: "That is what I want to emphasize: we really need to cut back in every aspect of the economy."
Pachauri is scheduled to deliver a speech tomorrow in London titled "Global Warming: The Impact of Meat Production and Consumption on Climate Change."
Pachauri was re-elected last week as chairman of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for a six-year term. He has led the panel since 2002 and oversaw the 2007 report on the global warming crisis.
The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned at the time that if no action is taken, rising global temperatures could cause catastrophic changes to the Earth's climate system, leading to famine, drought, storms, and the extinction of many species.
The organization also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, along with former US Vice President Al Gore.
