International environmental groups have announced that this year's Global Ecological Debt Day (Ecological Debt Day) falls on September 22. This means that from this day onwards, the world enters a state of ecological deficit, indicating that human life for the remainder of the year exceeds the environment's capacity to sustain.
Ecological Debt Day is also known as Earth Overshoot Day. The UK-based environmental group Global Footprint Network (GFN), which initiated this campaign, stated that the increase in global population and excessive consumption of resources have led to rapid destruction of agricultural, forestry, fishery resources, biodiversity, and soil quality on Earth, while also exacerbating climate change issues.
Ecological Debt Day (or Earth Overshoot Day) is a simple extension of the concept of ecological footprint, calculated by the formula:
Global Ecological Capacity (in global hectares) ÷ Global Ecological Footprint (in global hectares) x 365
Ecological Debt Day signifies that human resource consumption exceeds the Earth's sustainable capacity. Humanity first entered a state of ecological debt on December 19, 1987, and this date has been advancing each year. In 2006, Ecological Debt Day was on October 9, in 2007 it was on October 6, and this year, 2008, it has moved forward to September 22.
Environmentalists warn that, much like credit card debt, humanity must face the consequences of overusing Earth's resources.
