There are many foods in daily life that are packaged using PVC cling film or plastic bands. However, environmental groups are now calling for a complete ban on PVC plastic products by the government, as PVC products can release toxic substances at room temperature. Excessive intake of these substances can affect the male reproductive system and lead to diseases such as blood disorders.

PVC Plastic is Everywhere, Environmental Groups Urge Government to Accelerate Phase-Out
2009-02-25 Breaking News [China Broadcasting Network / Chen Yihua]
PVC plastic is ubiquitous, from construction to food packaging. Environmental groups point out that PVC plastic poses direct or indirect health risks throughout its lifecycle, from production to use and disposal. They urge the government to speed up the process of phasing out PVC plastic, starting with an immediate ban on its use in food packaging and medical supplies.
PVC plastic is commonly seen in household items like water pipes, medical IV tubes and bags, and everyday food packaging such as cling film. Environmental groups highlight that the plasticizers and stabilizers added to PVC threaten human health during use. If discarded and sent to incinerators, they can produce dioxins, harming the ecological environment.
Hsieh Ho-lin, Secretary-General of the Taiwan Watch Institute, said: "Products like cling film contain 50-70% oily liquids. Even without heating, these can easily leach out when in contact with food. For long-lasting items like water pipes, many stabilizers such as lead and cadmium are added. Over time, these substances can leach out, affecting the IQ of both children and adults."
PVC plastic is everywhere. Environmental groups cite a 2008 study by scholars from National Cheng Kung University and National Taiwan University, which found that the concentration of plasticizer metabolites (such as DEHP and other phthalates) in pregnant women in Taiwan was 4-13 times higher than that in American pregnant women. This indicates a high level of exposure to PVC plastic in daily life. They urge the government to accelerate the phase-out of PVC plastic, especially in food contact items, food containers, and medical supplies, which should be banned immediately.
