Feeling tired? The Taipei City Health Bureau yesterday released the latest results on the physical and mental health status of workplace employees. Female office workers showed higher fatigue indices and rates of "moderate" or "severe" psychological distress compared to their male counterparts. By industry analysis, the top three sectors with the highest work fatigue indices were construction, public administration, and manufacturing.

Tseng Kuang-pei, a clinical psychologist at Taipei City Hospital’s Songde Branch, explained that this survey involved voluntary participation from 26 workplaces. The workplace health questionnaire used included the Taiwan Worker Fatigue Scale, Work Quality Scale, and Brief Symptom Rating Scale.

Tseng Kuang-pei analyzed that women, highly educated individuals, those with irregular meal times, those without exercise habits, blue-collar workers, and those working overtime exhibited significantly higher levels of psychological distress and fatigue indices. The severe distress rate among women was 4.65%, notably higher than the 3.21% among men.

Tseng Kuang-pei noted that female office workers reported significantly higher personal fatigue, work fatigue, and fatigue toward service recipients compared to men. Possible reasons include women’s multiple roles and job characteristics encountered in the workplace, such as job rank, position type, and work autonomy. However, the "degree of overcommitment to work" was more severe among men than women.

Tseng Kuang-pei suggested that men should pay attention to time management, while women should learn to cope with fatigue reactions caused by stress. As for how to adjust physically and mentally, respondents recommended that employers offer health and wellness courses, followed by recreational activities, improving workplace atmosphere, clarifying job responsibilities, and salary increases.

This survey distributed 10,135 questionnaires, with 6,036 returned and 5,841 deemed valid.
