Thanks to the weight-loss trend, foods labeled as "oil-cutting" or "slimming" are currently popular in the market. However, a recent test by the Consumers' Foundation found that some of these products mainly contain laxatives or caffeine, creating a temporary illusion of weight loss. Excessive intake can harm women's health.

In March of this year, the Consumers' Foundation purchased 16 products claiming to have "oil-cutting" or "slimming" effects from drugstores and chain pharmacies in Taipei City and County, conducting tests and price comparisons. In terms of unit price, tea bags ranged from NT$10 to NT$20 per bag, while capsules ranged from NT$8.8 to NT$42.7.

According to the "List of Ingredients Permitted in Food," products containing "senna (stem) leaf (extract)" or "sennoside extract" should clearly indicate their content and recommended daily dosage. Due to their laxative properties, these ingredients can cause side effects such as dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Excessive use may affect the gastrointestinal system. Additionally, they can induce uterine contractions, making them unsuitable for women who are breastfeeding, menstruating, or pregnant. Products such as "Pure Fiber Tea," "Pelicare Slimming Tea," and "Oil-Cutting Fiber Tea" failed to provide clear labeling.

Products containing caffeine increase water excretion from the body, creating a temporary illusion of weight loss, which reverses once water is replenished. Excessive caffeine intake can lead to side effects such as palpitations, excitement, insomnia, vomiting, and diarrhea. Products like "A-Tong-Bo Body-Shaping Tea," "Tsao Ben Tang Enjoy Slimming Tea Bags," "HERBAL TEA Santuo Beauty Tea," "Oil-Cutting Fiber Tea," "Green Fitness Elves," and "Lu Zaoyuan Fast-Acting Fiber" mostly contain green tea, green coffee beans, or yerba mate, but none of them indicated the possible presence of natural caffeine.

The抽查 revealed that many manufacturers use vague marketing claims, with incomplete or overly small labeling of product ingredients and contents. Some product names are exaggerated or misleading.

The Consumers' Foundation advises consumers to carefully check whether product labels are complete when making purchases. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and individuals with chronic illnesses should avoid self-purchasing such products or consult medical professionals before use to ensure their health and safety.
